The Green Film Series for 2013 will begin with a special showing of Occupy Love on Thursday, January  3 at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse at 7:30 pm. The director Velcrow Ripper will be in attendance and will address the audience and answer questions. Ripper was raised on the Sunshine Coast and attended Elphinstone Secondary School in the 1980's. 

ripperDirector Velcrow RipperOccupy Love is the concluding film in Ripper's Fierce Love trilogy. The film takes you on a journey deep inside the global revolution of the heart that is erupting around the planet.Woven throughout the moving, action oriented backbone of the story, is a deep exploration of the heart of the movement, the meaning of love, and concrete examples of just what “another world”could look like, featuring some of the world’s key visionaries.


The line-up for the rest of the spring season includes:

Mon. Feb. 25 - Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth 
The remote homelands of the present day Maya in Mexico and Guatemala present a perfect microcosm to show how unhindered globalization is already destroying the Earth and indigenous cultures now under attack for their natural resources from all sides. Beautifully filmed by Eric Black and Frauke Sandig,  Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth  follows six young Maya into their daily and ceremonial life, revealing their determination to resist the destruction of their culture and environment. 
 
Mon. March 25 - Urban Roots 
Directed by Mark MacInnis, Urban Roots is a timely, moving and inspiring film that speaks to a nation grappling with collapsed industrial towns and the need to forge a sustainable and prosperous future. It shows dedicated Detroiters working tirelessly to fulfill their vision for locally-grown, sustainably-farmed food. Local food action community members will join in a discussion following the film.
 
Mon. April 29 - A Fierce Green Fire 
A FIERCE GREEN FIRE: The Battle For a Living Planet is the first big-picture exploration of the environmental movement – grassroots and global activism spanning fifty years. From climate change to the promise of transforming our civilization, the film tells vivid stories about people fighting – and succeeding – against enormous odds. The film unfolds in five acts, each with a key story and a compelling character including: David Brower and the Sierra Club,  Lois Gibbs and the Love Canal residents and Bill McKibben of 350.org.
 
The Gibsons Green Team and Sustainable Coast Magazine are presenting the Green Film Series. This is a special project of the Sunshine Coast Film Society. The Green Film series is dedicated to using film as a tool for community engagement on environmental and sustainability issues. The screening events are meant to foster the role of film as a catalyst for dialogue, networking and action.
 
Tickets are $10 or $7 for SC Film Society members. SCFS annual memberships ($15)  are available at the door or on the SCFS website at scfs.ca. Ticket reservations are available online at www.greenfilms.ca. Screening time is 7:30pm, with the doors open at 7pm. The Gibsons Heritage Playhouse is located at 662 North Road in Gibsons, BC.
