With corporations extracting and profiting from the resources of indigenous peoples all over the world, the film "Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth" follows six young Mayans in Guatamala and Mexico as they try to save their homelands from destruction. Beautifully filmed by Eric Black and Frauke Sandig, this special film will be shown on Monday, February 25 at 7:30 pm at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse as part of the spring Green Film Series

Through exquisite imagery, music and dreamlike sequences, the film touches on different facets of this extraction including mining from Canadian companies and introduction of GMO corn by Monsanto. The Mayans who see themselves as guardians of the earth tell their stories in their own words. 1438 Mayan Corn Mayan Corn

While the recent end of the Mayan calendar was seen by some as an end of the world, the Mayans perceived it as a closing of the circle and a chance for a new beginning. Viewers are invited to join in a last call to save the Earth.

Gibsons resident Michael Maser, a former exploration geologist, will moderate a timely discussion focusing on contentious mining developments as well as an ethical review of mining practices. Canadian mining companies have been in the news including Vancouver's Pacific Rim who is involved in a lawsuit against El Salvador and Hudbay Miinerals Inc.who is involved in three civil suits brought by Guatemalan villagers.4808 Guatemala GoldmineCanadian Mine
