Hope you're all having a lovely weekend, and getting out to the many artful events happening this weekend. I just have a couple things to pass along today:  some workshops, a call-out for donations to our One Straw lending shed, a great film this Monday, and some events presented by the Roberts Creek Community Association.

But first, I'd just like to remind you all that our Farm Gate Market is still going strong every Wednesday from 3 - 6 at the RC Hall.  Technically we have the outdoor space until the end of November, but we'll keep going for as long as our hardcore farmers still have the produce/products, enthusiasm & support from the weather :).  I'll let you know when it looks like we're winding down - likely it will be mid-November.

Workshops

Our Live and Learn program presents the first class in our "Chicken Series":

Chicken Butchering 101 with Bernard Wera

Saturday, October 29th from 10 am to 2 pm (or earlier, depending)
So you want to raise chickens for your own meat, but are not sure if you have what it takes to 'harvest' them?  This is the class for you ... a hands-on introduction to chicken butchering, covering how to catch, kill, and process our feathered friends humanely & efficiently to a ready to cook or freeze state.

Each participant will process at least 2 birds.
Space is very limited, and filling fast.  Please contact me if you'd like to register:  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 604.741.9859.
Cost:  $15
Location:  2879 Sunshine Coast Hwy, Roberts Creek (between Blackburn & Gladwin Trail ... follow the golden flag)
Bring your own lunch, and wear suitable clothing.

If chicken harvesting is not your scene, perhaps mushroom harvesting is a bit more attractive?

The Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve Society presents:

Introduction to Forest Mushrooms with Dr. John Field
Saturday, November 5th from 10 am to 3:30 pm

Learn about edible mushroom varieties through a morning indoor presentation and an afternoon guided field trip.
Cost: $30 ($15 for members)
Location:  Iris Griffith Centre - 1 km South of Ruby Lake on Hwy 101 (Madeira Park)

In Transition Film

Check out the message below from Gayle with the Gibsons Green Team.  This will be a great film, and a great chance to get involved in the local movement towards a sustainable, food sovereign, appropriate technology world!
I'll be there representing our One Straw Live and Learn program (and our other great projects) ... all part of the "Great Reskilling".

Subject: "In Transition" Oct. 24th - Heritage Theatre - 7:30 pm

Are you feeling like the world really is in transition? We have just the film for you. “In Transition” is the joyful response to our shifting economy: away from oil dependency and its attendant environmental problems and towards a local-based, sustainable economy that connects people and communities.

On Monday, Oct. 24th we’ll be screening this important film at the Gibsons Heritage Theatre (7:30 pm). Kevin Wilson and Julie Thorne of Transition Team Powell River and local transition trainee and educator Mark Lebbel will be on hand to discuss and answer questions.

This is the second in the Green Film Series presented by the Gibsons Green Team and Sustainablecoast.ca magazine. Visit the website for more details at greenfilms.ca.

The Green Film Series is a project of the Sunshine Coast Film Society.
That's Monday, October 24, Gibsons Heritage Playhouse, 7:30pm

Tickets are $5 for SC Film Society members or $8 (includes an event membership)

One Straw Society Lending Shed

Dear One Straw Members and community members,
Happy Fall Harvest! I am writing to notify you of a renewed initiative of the One Straw Society - the LENDING SHED / LENDING LIBRARY!
The One Straw Society is looking this winter to nourish and strengthen our roots in the community. As a grass roots, community based, organization we need the strength and motivation of our members to move us forward into the future. As part of our nourishing our roots initiative, we have put together a WISH LIST for our Lending Shed and Lending Library. As you clean up for the Winter and discover duplicates of tools, appliances, and books think about gifting these items to the benefit of the community.  This Spring, One Straw would love to boast a virtual shed full of important and useful tools that can be borrowed by One Straw Members, for their benefit and ultimately the benefit of sustainability on the Sunshine Coast.
THE TOP ITEMS WE ARE HOPING TO ACQUIRE THROUGH ITEM DONATIONS OR MONETARY DONATIONS ARE:
1. Food Dehydrator
2. Pressure Canner
3. Industrial Coffee Grinder(s) for small seed grinding
4. Various books relevant to the sustainability of the sunshine coast including those on: gardening, permaculture, seed saving, ecology, etc.
If you have other items, slightly used but still in good working condition, that are not listed above that you would like to contribute to the community Lending Shed/Lending Library - please contact Board Member Crystal at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Also, We are happy to announce that we are in the process of acquiring an Apple Press/Crusher that will be available as part of the lending shed to borrow. More details to follow.
Thank you for your support!
