On September 30, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) recycling depot will be leaving its current location at the Gibsons Park Plaza. The Gibsons Recycling Depot at 1018 Venture Way in Gibsons will be the sole provider of recycling drop off services in the area.
The SCRD and the Gibsons Recycling Depot have worked out an agreement to accommodate the increase of materials collected by the Gibsons Recycling Depot. "We are pleased to be able to help the SCRD and become the depot in Gibsons," said Barb Hetherington of Gibsons Recycle Depot. While they will receive some compensation from the SCRD, Hetherington emphasized that their operation is financed through refundables and the commodity prices they receive for recycled materials.
“The Gibsons Park Plaza property owner’s redevelopment plans do not accommodate the depot’s current location,” says Dion Whyte, SCRD Sustainable Services Manager. “We have had to make temporary arrangements while the SCRD Board of Directors completes the Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP). We want to ensure that the public continues to receive access to recycling services.”
The Gibsons Recycling Depot will collect the same materials as the Gibsons Park Plaza depot did and will have recycling drop off services from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., seven days per week. Information is available at www.gibsonsrecycling.ca.
