BC Ferries has announced a fare increase of 2.5% for the Horseshoe Bay - Langdale route effective December 12. Siting increased fuel costs, the fares will increase to 5% on the three major Vancouver Island - Mainland routes.

Meanwhile, it seems that the increase violates Bill 14, the Coastal Ferry Amendment Act which states in part: "BC Ferries from obtaining extraordinary price cap increases, and requires ministerial approval (as opposed to Commissioner approval) for the discontinuance of ferry services, until October 1, 2012".

MLA Nicholas Simons agrees stating that "Gary Coons, NDP ferry critic, is right again. A fuel surcharge violates Bill 14, the Coastal Ferry Amendment Act".

Horseshoe Bay - Langdale increases will mean the addition of: 0.30 for passengers tickets, 0.15 for children's tickets,  1.10 for passenger vehicle, 0.55 for a motorcycle, 0.11 bus per foot, and  0.15 commercial vehicle per foot.

While the Company has reduced its fuel consumption by approximately 5 per cent since then, BC Ferries projects its 2011/2012 fuel procurement costs could be over $120 million.
