A call to action to protest the management of the Marine Highways begins on December 12, the day the ferry fees increase. Dec. 12th Action Against B.C. Ferry Inc. is asking all communities affected by the ferries to protest the increase by "taking creative but non-disruptive action, and keep taking action, until the provincial government passes public demands into law" at ferry terminals throughout B.C. The protest is endorsed by Occupy Powell River.
The committee headed by Gordan Macatee, to re-evaluate the Coastal Ferry Act closed to further comments on December 5. Macatee will begin making recommendations to Blair Lekstrom, the Minister of Transportation & Infrastructure. B.C.
Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons stated, "It's important to remember that the cause of the problem is BC Liberal government's Coastal Ferries Act".
In a bit of irony the Ferries's contract comes up for renewal on April Fool's Day, 2012.
The group suggests that people "set up banners at terminals asking drivers to honk for the 99%, boycott the gift shops and cafeterias, make and wear pins proclaiming your opposition - and hand them out to fellow passengers, voice your support to the municipalities and the Marine Ferry Workers and their Unions, enlist local boat-owners to set up alternative transport, petition your mayor and council to get bus services for your routes, contact your MLAs to start drafting legislation, inform your local media of upcoming actions, form a local Occupy group to create a public forum and discuss your town's needs and plans, your imagination is the only limit to your participation".
