Mr. Eagle Walz of Powell River was presented with the John Hind-Smith Environmental Award by the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association at the annual Friends of the SCCA event held at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt on Tuesday, May 15.
Walz was recognized for his many contributions to raise the awareness of the natural environment on the coast. Among his contributions sited were his efforts to enhance and maintain the trail networks such as the Sunshine Coast Trail system and other back country accesses and his ability to bring divergent groups to the table and leading them to successful outcomes, while maintaining a dignity and respect for the parties.
The event kicked off a two-week exhibit of the selected artists for the SCCA’s 2013 fundraising calendar which is sponsored by Dr. Lorne Berman, a long time supporter of the SCCA. The exhibit consisted of selected photographs by the 2013 calendar winners, Bob Evermon, Allan Forest, Don Klan, Carl Olsen, Alan Sirulnikoff, and Frank Thorburn, as well as the works of the featured artist from the 2012 calendar, board member, Tella Sametz. The evening featured the beautiful sounds of Ms. Anna Lumiere on the grand piano.
