One Straw Food Systems Network Coordinator
Job Description
The One Straw Society is seeking an enthusiastic, energetic and committed individual to fill the position of Food Systems Network Coordinator for the Lower Sunshine Coast, BC. This rewarding job opportunity requires someone who is outgoing, organized, and passionate about community sustainability and food sovereignty, and has the experience and skills to coordinate events, programs and public engagement activities.
This part time position is scheduled to begin in January 2013 (training) and involves an annual contract commitment.
Responsibilities include:
1) Engage community members in local food economy / system, including: maintain the Green Banner Local Food Directory, organize the annual One Straw Fall Faire and the annual Edible Garden Tour, and promote local food purchasing options.
2) Build local Food Action Network capacity: host community meetings and public education events, maintain and update the email list, prepare and distribute communications including regular e-newsletters, website updates, press-releases and media contacts.
3) Support local food security initiatives of One Straw: supervise coordinators, assist with promotions, liaise with the media and oversee reporting requirements.
4) Public education, engagement and community capacity building: host information booths at public events and festivals, and liaise with the public and the One Straw community (transmit ideas, share resources, connect community members).
5) Develop sustainable food policy: engage with local stakeholders and the broader community, participate in monthly Food Policy Council meetings.
Qualifications:
Demonstrated time management and organization skills, and proven ability to lead and manage projects and budgets.
Flexible and resourceful with a strong sense of initiative, and a proven ability to work in fast-paced environments, mobilize and coordinate volunteers, and prioritize tasks.
Experience planning and coordinating public programs such as workshops, educational events, celebrations and community dialogues.
Knowledgeable about local food systems, community capacity building and community sustainability / resiliency.
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
Experience writing and presenting clear, concise written reports and engaging communications / press releases.
Highly organized, creative and self-directed; able to work in a team as well as independently.
Access to reliable transportation and willingness to travel throughout Lower Coast. Access to a computer, internet and telephone and able to respond to communications in a timely manner.
Experience with fundraising an asset.
Compensation:
Hourly wage is commensurate with skills and experience. Annual contract fee is $9000 plus expenses.

The Society was founded in 1994 by local author, activist and teacher, Robin Wheeler, and represents approximately 200 dedicated members while serving a much broader number of community members through our programming, workshops and forums.
