Tis the Season

As the air gets crisper and the chill sets in, it feels like the perfect time to cozy in with family and friends and get ready to celebrate with some festive cheer.

We would like to thank everyone who came out to the Gibsons Public Library on November 19th for the screening of the Chocolate Farmer.  it was a great night filled with thoughful discussion and some yummy chocolate too!

One Straw will be taking a little break this month, but there are still some great activities to get in on including some Live and Learn workshops.  Please enjoy reading about some of these great events and learning of ways to get involved with community on the coast over the holidays!

We hold deep appreciation of all of the support you have given us over the past year and look forward to more excitement, growth and celebration with you in 2015!

We wish you and yours the very best over the season and the happiest of New Years.

in gratitude,
One Straw Society

Saturday, December 13th
At the Rockwood Centre
5511 Shorncliffe ave., Sechelt
2pm to 4pm: Traditional Indian Parantha
with Sarita Moodie

Sarita loves creating delicious cultural dishes for her family.  In this workshop she will show you how to make traditional Indian unleavened bread called Parantha. We will stuff it with a couple of common fillings including spices, potatoes and/or other veggies. We will learn rolling and stuffing techniques, and of course get to sample our finished flatbreads. You will go home inspired to try this recipe on your own.

Class fee is by $10 – Please pre-register for this event!

Christmas Cookie Exchange

Sunday, December 14th
At the Masonic Hall
Beside the Roberts Creek Hall in Roberts Creek.
1pm to 4pm: with Lynn Grossutti
Lynn is a local caterer specializing in using local foods to create delicious meals.  One of her passions is baking cookies.  Join us with a few dozen of your holiday favorites to share and bring home your tin filled with assorted delights.

In the kitchen we will be making two of my family treasures handed down through generations.  The first is almond crescents, a small shortbread style cookie that is made in many cultures and is absolutely delectable.  The other is a Fruitcake.  This fruitcake uses local heritage apples as its base and substitutes the candied fruit with golden raisins.  It is spiced to perfection and tastes amazing with hot mulled cider.  Everyone will get a loaf to take home and a dozen almond crescents.  If you would like to bring a tin of your own special Christmas cookies we will be giving participants an opportunity to share them among each other to create a truly unique gift idea.

Class fee is by $10 – Please pre-register for this event!

Presented by the Live and Learn Program of
One Straw Society
Funded by a grant from the Vancouver Health SMARTFund.
