Mac Palmiere, president & CEO of Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Ltd. announced on Thursday, July 15 that the company has entered into a purchase and sale agreement with Paper Excellence BV. A Netherlands based company, Paper Excellence BV is owned by Sinar Mas of Indonesia.

Sinar Mas has been recently criticized by environmental groups for destroying rainforest and peat lands in Sumatra. The logs they are harvesting go to their pulp mills for their Asia Pulp and Paper company.  Greenpeace has produced a report entitled “How Sinar Mas is Pulping the Planet”. Greenpeace is calling on major companies such as Wal-Mart and Kentucky Fried Chicken to stop buying APP paper products and palm oil.

Since April, Paper Excellence BV has purchased mills in Mackenzie, BC and Meadowlake, Saskatchewan and two pulp mills in France from Timbec SAS, a subsidiary of Timbec Inc. of Canada.

Howe Sound Pulp and Paper is jointly owned by Canfor Corp of Canada and Oji Paper Co.Ltd. of Japan.

HSPP stressed that they expect the transition to be smooth and it will be “business as usual” for their employees, suppliers and customers.
