The green carpet will roll out on Wednesday, August 8 for the gala premiere of "For the Love of Gospel Rock", a film by local filmmaker Loretta Macklam at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse. The Green Film Series presents this beautiful film as a fundraiser for the Friends of Gospel Rock and film production costs. The film features interviews with local environmentalists and historians who explain the significance and importance of this very special place on the Sunshine Coast.
Macklam grew up in Gibsons and recalls how the trail through Gospel Rock was used by everyone. " The owner at the time let the public use the trail and as kids we hiked the trail from lower to upper Gibsons to visit our grandparents, " said Macklam. "I wanted to make this film to help raise awareness about this special jewel that people here are so strongly connected to and want to preserve." She hopes that the film will relate that special feeling and also help newcomers to the coast understand the history of Gospel Rock.
This is a very timely event as the public hearings for the Gospel Rock Neighborhood Plan are expected to begin this fall.
Doors open at 7:15 and the evening will begin with wine and desserts in the lobby before the film event at 8 pm. A short film made in the '80's about Gospel Rock, the short, " Forever Lost" and an Alan Sirulnikoff slide show of Gospel Rock photos will accompany the film.
The gala is receiving support from varied coastal artists who will be sharing sales of their artwork featuring Gospel Rock at the event. A special boxed dessert sale will be held at the end of the evening.
This is the second film for Macklam. Her first film, "Forever Lost" featured Choralations, the Sunshine Coast children's choir directed by Janice Brunson. The choir is composed of children in grades 4 to 12.
Tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance. They are available at Gaia's Fair Trade and Laedeli in Gibsons and the Sechelt Visitors Centre. They are also available online at: http://fortheloveofgospelrock.eventbrite.ca/. There will be no tickets at the door.
