SCRD Energy & Emissions Plan

PH Landfill Decision Postponed

At the SCRD board meeting on Thursday, February 25, 2010, the decision to close the Pender Harbour landfill was put on hold until the next board meeting on March 11.

Recyling Depot Open House

Gibsons Recycling Depot held an open house on February 16 to showcase their Styrofoan and e-waste processing programs. Attendees were: John France, Cathy Kenny, Julie Clark , Darren Inkster, Donna Shugar, Beth, (all from SCRD), Howard White (Pender Harbour), Norm Bonin (Direct Disposal, SWMP), Brian Sadler, Jeff Collins and Ed Lands (PMAC).

Sechelt Nation responds to dumping on Band land

The Sechelt Nation has met with the RCMP and Direct Disposal owner Norm Bonin regarding his company's dumping of two loads of mixed waste on Band land on February 2. Chief Garry Feschuk stated that "it is upsetting that people would do something like this" when he spoke with Sustainable Coast.

Committee votes to close PH landfill

The SCRD Infrastructure Committee decided to close the Pender Harbour Landfill and replace it with a transfer station in a 4-3 vote. Voting against the closure was Area A director Eric Graham of Pender Harbour, Area B director Gary Nohr of Halfmoon Bay and Area F director Lee Turnbull of West Howe Sound.

Direct Disposal dumps waste on Sechelt Band land

Two trucks owned by Direct Disposal Corporation of Sechelt were observed dumping a mixed load of waste at the Tymax and Coastland Wood Industries green waste site on Sechelt Inlet Road in Sechelt. The property is on land owned by the Sechelt Band.

SCRD Not Required to Follow Public Wishes on Landfill, Says Shugar

 

When a speaker at the Jan. 19 meeting on the fate of the Pender landfill asked Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) Sustainable Services Manager Dion Whyte if there was one good thing he could say about keeping the landfill going, Whyte thought for a moment then said, "It would please a lot of people in this room."
