Sunshine Coast Contributes to Connect the Dots

Joining in 350.org's May 5, 2012 Connect the Dots campaign, The Friends of Gospel Rock Society placed a giant dot on the breezy promontory at 1 o'clock. At the same time people all over the world held similar events. The Friends' message, under a Gospel Rock banner, was simple: No Ecocide.

May 5 has been declared an international day of action to bring attention to climate change. 350.org has declared a Connect the Dots to Climate Change photo event. They are asking everyone, at every local event, to take a photo of their “climate dot” and upload it to their website where the images will be assembled into a global mosaic. They are emphasizing that this is a chance to educate about the problem.

Coast Glass Can Now Be Truly Recycled

So you thought when you brought your glass jars and bottles to the depots they were being recycled? Well, not really. The SCRD crushes the glass and uses it as aggregate in roads and at the dump site. This is something that has disturbed many here on the coast for years. It also disturbed the people at Gibsons Recycling Depot. They have found a way to be part of the solution.

Have you been thinking about changing to an electric vehicle? This may be the year. Currently, there are rebates of up to $5000 on the purchase of an electric or hybrid vehicle. A $500 rebate program is also available for residential charging stations. And more money has been added to see public charging stations added throughout the province.

"Revenge of the Electric Car" Next in Green Film Series

The Green Film Series will be showing their final film for this season, “Revenge of the Electric Car” on two nights, Monday, April 23 and Tuesday, April 24. Local electric car enthusiasts will have their cars on display in the parking lot before the film at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse.

The Green Film Series has announced a second showing of the popular documentary movie, "Queen of the Sun, What are the Bees Telling Us?". The film will be shown on Monday, April 9 at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse at 7:30 pm, followed by discussion and networking with beekeeper guests.

The Vancouver Art Gallery square was packed with protesters on the Monday, March 26, gathering to hear Bill McKibbon of 350.org speak to the concerns about increasing carbon infrastructure, which a pipeline from the Alberta Tar Sands would most assuredly do. There were other speakers, mostly native who spoke strongly against the pipeline and the oil tanker traffic that would ply our fish-sensitive coastline. We were reminded that these tankers were 1,000 feet long or about the length of three football fields. Hard to imagine.
