Target Marine Requests Zoning Change

A public hearing was recently held in Sechelt to discuss the OCP admendment and rezoning requested by Target Marine Hatcheries Ltd. to enable the company to process fish, specifically sturgeon eggs into caviar. The company has been raising sablefish (black cod) for 24 years and sturgeon for 11 years. They want to be able to harvest the eggs and process them on their own property. They plan to raise a maximum of 5000 female sturgeon. It takes 10 years before the eggs can be harvested from each fish.

The Council of Senior Citizens Organizations (COSCO) is asking the Gibsons Council to prohibit or limit the burning of toxic materials by Howe Sound Pulp and Paper. HSPP is currently seeking a amended permit to burn demolition waste at their mill.

ELF Calls for Dakota Ridge Cutblock to be Set Aside as OGMA

Siting an estimate of less than 2% original old growth forest left in the Mt. Elphinstone forest, the Elphinstone Logging Focus (ELF) group has succeeded in calling for a 110 acre (44 hectares) cut block to be placed into an Old Growth Management Area (OGMA). The area is located on the lower slopes of Dakota Ridge. An OGMA protects remnants of old growth forests to help increase bio-diversity in a fragmented landscape.

Elphinstone Forest & Water Group Advocates for Policy Change

Community members of the Roberts Creek area are raising concerns over their water quality as logging by BC Timber Sales takes place in their watershed. They have formed the Elphinstone Water and Forest Ad-hoc Community Group to bring attention to their concerns and to advocate for change in forestry policy.

HSPP Holds Open House

Howe Sound Pulp and Paper held an open house on September 22 in Gibsons. The purpose was to explain their recent application to the BC Ministry of Environment to amend their air emissions permit to enable them to increase the use of biomass fuel (construction and wood waste) and reduce the use of natural gas fuel.
