Protest Called Against BC Ferries Beginning Dec. 12

A call to action to protest the management of the Marine Highways begins on December 12, the day the ferry fees increase. Dec. 12th Action Against B.C. Ferry Inc. is asking all communities affected by the ferries to protest the increase by "taking creative but non-disruptive action, and keep taking action, until the provincial government passes public demands into law" at ferry terminals throughout B.C. The protest is endorsed by Occupy Powell River.

Standing Ovation for "White Water, Black Gold"

An enthusiastic audience gave director David Lavallee a standing ovation after the showing of his new documentary film, "White Water, Black Gold", the third film in the Green Film Series sponsored by Sustainable Coast Magazine and The Gibsons Green Team. It is a film that should be seen by everyone. This is Lavallee's first movie. He says he had never done anything like this before. But he has put together a moving and informative film.

BC Ferries Announces Fare Increase, Violates Bill 14

BC Ferries has announced a fare increase of 2.5% for the Horseshoe Bay - Langdale route effective December 12. Siting increased fuel costs, the fares will increase to 5% on the three major Vancouver Island - Mainland routes.

Could BC be the very last province to enact a plan to fight poverty?

A report released today by BC Campaign 2000 shows that the province’s child poverty rate rose from 14.5 percent in 2008 to 16.4 percent in 2009, using Statistics Canada’s low income cut-offs before tax as a measure of poverty.

Coastal First Nations Reaffirm Opposition to Enbridge Pipeline

The Coastal First Nations, an alliance of First Nations on British Columbia’s North and Central Coast and Haida Gwaii, has reaffirmed their opposition to the proposed $6.6 billion pipeline that would carry oil from the tar sands to BC's northern coast where it could be loaded on ships and sent to Asia.

"The Coastal First Nations categorically oppose Enbridge's Northern Gateway Project," says Art Sterritt. Sterritt, the executive director of Coastal First Nations, added that "we unequivocally maintain our ban on oil tankers on the coast."

In Transition Film Resonates with Audience

 

An enthusiastic audience of around 95 people attended the latest film in the Green Film Series sponsored by Sustainable Coast Magazine and The Gibsons Green Team as a project of the Sunshine Coast Film Society at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse on Monday, October 24. The film "In Transition" led the audience through the beginnings of the Transition Movement which began in 2006 in the UK.

Lethal Atlantic salmon virus found in BC sockeye

Infectious Salmon Anemia virus has been found in two young sockeye salmon. Sheer reckless, negligent behaviour has loosed a highly infectious fish farm influenza virus into the North Pacific. I have been told over and over by industry and government that this could not happen, but they were wrong.
