Lawsuit Against Marine Harvest Canada & Minister of Fisheries Filed by Morton and Ecojustice

The transfer of diseased salmon into an open-pen fish farm operated by Marine Harvest appears to have violated federal law, Ecojustice lawyers said today.
 
Ecojustice, acting on behalf of well-known biologist Alexandra Morton, has launched a lawsuit seeking a Federal Court order declaring that the transfer of diseased farmed Atlantic salmon into waters shared with wild fish is unlawful.

Public Forum Calls For Sechelt Council to Halt New Wastewater Contract

 A resolution calling for a reconsideration of the decision to build the wastewater plant at the Ebbtide site was passed at a well attended public forum 'Sechelt: Wastewater or Waste Money?'  at the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre on May 29. The Forum was jointly sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Senior Citizens (COSCO-BC) and the Sechelt Sewage Coalition (SSC).

“A Fierce Green Fire” Explores the Story of the Environmental Movement

The final film in the spring Green Film Series is "A Fierce Green Fire, The Battle for the Living Plantet" will be screened on Monday, April 29 at 7:30 pm at the Gibsons Hertiage Theatre. The film chronicles the largest movement of the 20th century and brings together all the major parts of  environmentalism and connects them. It focuses on activism, people fighting to save their homes, their lives, the future –and succeeding against all odds. A discussion led by local activists will follow the film screening.

EV Charging Stations Rev Up on the Coast

Two more electric vehicle charging stations, these at the Egmont Heritage Centre, have been added to the Sunshine Coast. After being active for only a few days, Maureen Parrott of the Centre reported that their first EV, a Nissan Leaf,  used the station while the car owners went for a hike.

"Real Story" Behind the Salmon Farms and the DFO Revealed

Audible gasps were heard from the audience while viewing the new film "Salmon Confidential" as information on salmon diseases, muzzling of scientists, loss of wild BC salmon and selling of sick fish in Canada markets was revealed. Filmmaker Twyla Roscovich followed biologist Alexandra Morton and her team around BC as they gathered evidence of salmon viruses in wild and farmed fish.

Petition Drive Begins Concerning Sechelt Wastewater Treatment Plans

A petition drive has begun to hold Sechelt Council accountable for their recent announcement of plans for a new $22.4 million wastewater treatment plant. Organizers of the Sechelt Sewage Coalition have posted a petition on the website ipetitions.com. The petition was posted on March 19 and has been circulating online. 

This is one of several organizations that are questioning the decision by Sechelt Council to build a new wastewater treatment facility at the Ebbtide location. Sunshine Coast Senior Citizens (COSCO) have already expressed their concerns with the contract in a recent letter to Sechelt Mayor Henderson and Council. COSCO Letter. There was also a protest on March 13 outside council chambers organized by Jef Keighley and the Coalition for Responsible Public Participation in Sechelt’s Wastewater Plan. Around 100 attended that protest.

"Salmon Confidential" exposes cover-up

Sustainable Coast will host a special showing of "Salmon Confidential" on Wednesday, April 3 at 7:30 pm at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse. There will be a discussion after the film with the filmmaker Twyla Roschovitch. Admission by donation.
