The controversial Narrows Inlet Hydro Project has gained a conditional Environmental Assessment Certificate and a new business partner. The certificate was announced on January 20 by Environment Minister Mary Polak and Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett.

BC Ferries Coalition reports that 2020 people participated in the ferry protest rallies held along the coast on Saturday, January 18. The protests were staged at nine locations on the Sunshine Coast.

Environmental groups have launched a lawsuit to block Cabinet approval of the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline. The Joint Review Panel’s (JRP) final report, the groups say, is based on insufficient evidence and does not satisfy the environmental assessment process.Ecojustice lawyers, representing ForestEthics Advocacy, Living Oceans Society and Raincoast Conservation Foundation, filed the lawsuit today at the Federal Court level.

The Federal government has quietly lifted the moratorium on salmon farm licenses on the BC coast. So far 11 companies have applied to expand or begin new farms. The entire BC coast is open to applications with the exception of the Discovery Islands archipelago. This area was specifically cited by Justice Cohen in his 2012 decision as an area that should not permit any new fish farms. Most (98%) of the salmon farms in BC are owned by Noregian companies.

The BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations has invited the public to comment on additional old growth management area psroposals before February 18.
The ministry is proposing to establish old growth management areas along Toba and Jervis inlets near Powell River and on parts of the Sechelt peninsula.
