Temporary Hold Placed on Coal Exploration Permits in Klappan

VICTORIA - The Government of British Columbia has issued a temporary order under Section 7 of the Environment and Land Use Act to defer decisions on permits and permit amendments related to existing coal tenures in the Klappan until December 1, 2014.

DamNation Opens Green Film Fall Series Sept. 15

The Green Film Series will open their fall season on Monday, September 15 with the film DamNation at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse.  A second screening is scheduled for Thursday, September 18 at the SC Arts Centre in Sechelt. This film explores the changing attitude towards dams in the past 50 years, their removal and the recovery of the fish and eco-systems of the rivers.

It is a timely film for British Columbia as the Province considers building larger dams such as Site C in the Peace River Valley and independent power plants on our rivers, while in the US they are beginning to remove dams and find more cost-effective and innovative solutions.

Sechelt (shíshálh) First Nation Litigation Gains Momentum From Recent Supreme Court of Canada Decision

shíshálh First Nation accepts the game-changing decision of the Supreme Court of Canada that recognized the Aboriginal Title of the Tsilhqot'in Nation over 1700 square kilometres of central British Columbia. The decision represents the first time a Court has declared Aboriginal Title, and confirmed that where Title exists the First Nation effectively owns the land, and the Crown and third parties cannot do things on that land without the consent of the First Nation.

Ministry of Agriculture to Hold Consultations on ALR Bill 24

The Ministry of Agriculture has begun consultations with B.C. farmers regarding the drafting of regulations related to Bill 24. Minister of Agriculture Norm Letnick recently met in Richmond with representatives from the B.C. Agriculture Council (BCAC), the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) and the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) to discuss the consultation process.

Zero Waste International Conference Coming to BC

The Zero Waste International Alliance has chosen Nanaimo, BC for its upcoming conference to be held October 2-4. Alternatives to Incinerators & Landfills, Zero Waste International Alliance Conference and Dialogue is a solutions based conference that unites local Zero Waste advocates with international experts. Sunshine Coast business owners and Zero Waste Canada directors Buddy Boyd and Barb Hetherington of Gibsons Recyling Depot are helping to organize the event. Reuse, salvaging, repurposing and conserving materials and resources will be important topics in the diverse program of presentations in the three-day conference.

SC Community Provides Motivation for Keeping Our Coast Clean and Beautiful

While sailing on the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale, it is difficult to comprehend how anyone could want to threaten the beauty of this pristine coastline. This past Earth Day, Beyond Boarding was invited to screen Northern Grease at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse as part of the Green Film Series. Scott Knowles and I are both members of Beyond Boarding and were fortunate to be the ones to do the screening.
