Report from the Coal Hard Facts II Forum

More than 100 people gathered in the Sechelt First Nations Hall on Nov. 1st for the Coal Hard Facts II forum.  The afternoon was dedicated to the ongoing fight to prevent thermal coal from being shipped from Port Metro Vancouver to Texada Island for storage.  The coal would then be re-loaded onto 1000’ long bulk freighters which will travel past Gulf Island locations on its way to the Pacific and on to Asia.

While BC Promotes LNG and Site C Dam, Report Shows Potential Geothermal Energy to Power Entire Province

While the BC Ministry of Environment continues to promote the LNG (liquified natural gas) industry as the world's cleanest and decisions are being made to build a third dam in the Peace River Valley, a new report from CanGEA (Canadian Geothermal Energy Association) shows that BC has the potential to power the entire province with geothermal energy.

October Green Film Explores Factory Farming with Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret

The Green Film Series continues it's fall season on Monday, October 27 with the film Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret  at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse. A second showing is scheduled for Wednesday, October 29 in Sechelt at the Sechelt Indian Band Hall. The Wood Duck Bus is scheduled to bring Pender Harbour residents to the screening in Sechelt.

Site C Receives Environmental Assessment Certificate from Ministers

Environment Minister Mary Polak and Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson have issued an environmental assessment certificate to BC Hydro for the Site C Clean Energy project, located seven kilometres southwest of Fort St. John.

ELF Roadblock Stops Surespan Logging

Elphinstone Logging Focus (ELF) has effectively stopped logging in the Chapman Creek watershed by Surespan Group of North Vancouver. Hans Penner of ELF was in the forest on Monday, October 6 when he noticed a new road and cutblock above the creek.

Federal Government Cancels Key Industry and Environmental Group Meeting Intended to Save Species at Risk

The federal government has decided to cancel a high level meeting used to solicit advice from industry and environmental groups on how to best protect Canada’s species at risk. The move flies in the face of last week’s Living Planet Report, which calls for urgent action to stem dramatic biodiversity loss around the globe.
 
No rationale for the cancellation has been given, leaving stakeholders questioning the federal government’s commitment to protecting Canada’s most vulnerable wildlife.

Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick announced today that 12 commissioners and six vice chairs have been appointed to the Agricultural Land Commission’s (ALC) six regional panels, and that all panel vacancies are now filled.

Zero Waste: Recovering Materials, People and the Economy

ZWIA Conference, Nanaimo, BC October 2-4, 2014

The ninth annual Zero Waste International Conference was held this week in Nanaimo, BC. With the title Alternatives to Incinerators and Landfills, it was held there for a very specific reason: the proposed incinerator at Duke Point.

The message throughout the conference was loud and clear: no burn, no bury and no toxins. Speaker after speaker cited health, economics, climate change and a community's right to the democratic process as major concerns with building incinerators.

A Report from the NY People's Climate March

It’s Sept. 20 and we are in New York City.climate march 1My wife Heather and I have been here for a few days taking in all the sites.  Our purpose for being here is to take part in the People’s Climate March (PCM).  I’d read about it a couple of months back and thought maybe I should go.  I guess I’ve been “green” all my life.  I was always conscience of the environment and how badly we were treating “mother earth”.  Heather and I tried to be concerned.  You know, picking up garbage, fighting for just causes and living a somewhat frugal life style.  However, we’d never really bought into doing something concrete about it.  Naomi Klein would call that “looking away”.
